On September 10, Karina appeared on Girls’ Generation Hyoyeon’s YouTube channel “Hyo’s Level Up”. During their chat, she reflected on her experiences working alongside BoA, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Seulgi, Wendy, and Winter as part of the project group GOT the Beat.
Karina admitted she felt small at the time, saying: “I was really intimidated back then. Winter and I together hadn’t even debuted for two years, so I constantly felt like I was hitting my limits. There was a vibe that naturally came from their years of experience.”
Still, she shared that she often rewatched their practice videos: “I looked at them so many times, both to study and to keep for myself. It was a huge learning experience.” Hyoyeon added that she also kept the videos because she liked the unique lineup, despite usually deleting practice clips.
The two then touched on the famous photo nicknamed the “SM military discipline meme.” In the image, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon are lounging on a couch, Seulgi and Wendy sit upright, while Karina and Winter are on the floor. The picture went viral as fans joked about “senior idols enforcing discipline.”
Hyoyeon clarified: “Because of that picture, people kept asking me if we were disciplining the juniors.” Karina explained: “They were my role models, so I didn’t really want to sit on the couch next to them. Honestly, even with my own members, I rarely sit on the sofa. It wasn’t about discipline at all.”
Hyoyeon caused laughter as she compared group habits: “In Girls’ Generation, we always sit on the couch, even if it’s too small. We’ll squeeze in or sit on someone’s lap just to stay on it. Every team has a different vibe.”
Meanwhile, aespa recently made a comeback on September 5 with their sixth mini-album Rich Man and are continuing promotional activities.
