The sudden death of popular YouTuber Great Library (real name Na Dong Hyun), who had over 1.44 million subscribers, has fueled a wave of conspiracy theories and controversy online.

Some speculated that his passing was linked to his past acquaintance with President Lee Jae Myung, while others mocked his death under the guise of offering condolences.

Right-wing YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute uploaded a video titled “Great Library Death Mystery (Lee Jae Myung, Yumdaeng)” on September 6, featuring photos of Great Library, President Lee, and Great Library’s ex-wife YouTuber Yumdaeng (Lee Chae Won). The broadcast, which lasted over an hour, drew dubious comparisons to late singer Wheesung, who passed away in March. Garosero Research Institute’s Kim Se Ui went so far as to question whether Wheesung had been “forced” into suicide and hinted that Great Library’s ties to politics may be suspicious.

He also brought up Great Library and Yumdaeng’s participation in a 2018 Gyeonggi Province event when Lee Jae Myung was governor, framing the late YouTuber as “pro-Democratic Party” before asking why he was “suddenly found dead.”

However, most of the 128 comments under the video criticized the speculation, calling it defamatory and disrespectful to the deceased. Some netizens said they unsubscribed from the channel, condemning it for exploiting the tragedy for views.

Further controversy came from YouTuber Dragon Lake (Park Chan Woo), who posted a mocking tribute on social media referencing Great Library’s past divorce. He wrote, “Crying over divorce. Rest in peace, Great Library,” which many saw as offensive. He added more disparaging comments, recalling their tense exchanges during a 2020 Galaxy Live Quiz Show broadcast.

Police reported that Great Library was found dead at his home in Gwangjin-gu on the morning of September 6, with no signs of foul play or forced entry. No suicide note was discovered, and initial investigations suggest an underlying health condition, as he had recently complained of chest pains. His father also passed away from a heart attack. An autopsy is planned to confirm the exact cause of death.

His wake is being held at Konkuk University Hospital Funeral Hall in Seoul, with the funeral scheduled for the morning of September 9.
