The controversy arose after Choo Young Woo attended a Tom Ford Beauty promotional event at The Hyundai Seoul earlier this week. While using his phone during the event, cameras captured the design of his phone case, which quickly circulated online.
The case features an illustration of a young schoolgirl in uniform, standing in front of a street filled with shops including one labeled ADULT GOODS with the name “LOVE MERCI.” The name corresponds to an actual adult products store located in Akihabara, Japan.
Attention soon shifted to the artist behind the illustration. According to netizens, the creator is active on Instagram, X, and Weibo, offering merchandise and commissioned works through direct messages. However, the artist is also known for producing drawings that sexualize schoolgirls, raising concerns over Choo Young Woo’s choice of merchandise.

This led many to question whether the actor personally purchased the case from the illustrator, and if so, whether he knowingly supported an artist accused of creating exploitative content.
The scandal follows earlier criticism Choo Young Woo faced this year for following several controversial internet broadcast jockeys on Instagram, some of whom are infamous for sexually suggestive or problematic content.
As debate grows online, many netizens are demanding clarification from the actor and his agency regarding his association with the controversial imagery.
