On September 17, Jeju City’s Aewol-eup office confirmed it imposed a fine of 1 million KRW after investigating a complaint filed through the national petition system. Authorities found that the drama crew violated Article 8 of the Waste Control Act by abandoning waste, including plastic cups, trash bags, and butane gas canisters, at a forest site.
Although butane canisters were discovered among the waste, officials stated they could not verify whether the crew had ignited a fire, meaning violations under the Forest Protection Act did not apply. The office emphasized stricter conditions will be enforced in future filming permits within state-managed forests, including mandatory site restoration checks once filming ends.
The highly anticipated Disney+ series Delusion has found itself in the middle of controversy after its production team was accused of leaving trash behind at a filming location.
On August 28, production company Showbox released an official statement addressing the issue. “The filming ended late at night, and because it was dark, we failed to thoroughly clean up the site. As soon as we were made aware, we immediately apologized to the site officials and local authorities, and all trash has since been removed. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and will take greater care in the future,” the company stated.

The controversy began a day earlier when a netizen posted photos on social media showing discarded items in a forest near the filming site, including custom coffee holders with the lead actors’ faces. The post quickly gained attention, sparking criticism that the production team was negligent in managing the site.

Delusion is set in 1935 Gyeongseong (colonial-era Seoul) and follows painter Yoon Yi-ho (played by Kim Seon Ho), who is tasked with painting the portrait of the mysterious woman Song Jeong-hwa (played by Suzy). As he delves into her world, he begins uncovering secrets hidden behind her allure.
The drama is directed by Han Jae Rim, known for films such as The Face Reader and The King. With a reported budget of 45 billion KRW (approx. $33 million USD), Delusion has been marketed as one of Disney+ Korea’s biggest projects of the year.

While the scale of the production has generated high expectations, this incident has cast an unwanted shadow over the series. Netizens expressed disappointment, urging the team to be more responsible with public spaces, especially given the size and prestige of the project.
Despite the controversy, interest in the drama remains strong, particularly due to the star power of Suzy and Kim Seon Ho. With filming still ongoing, the production team has pledged to ensure stricter site management moving forward.
