During a promotional interview with GQ for his upcoming film Highest 2 Lowest, Denzel Washington appeared alongside director Spike Lee and rapper-actor A$AP Rocky. While reflecting on his career, the veteran actor surprised many by confessing, “I don’t watch movies anymore.” He elaborated, “I’m tired of films now. I don’t even go to theaters. Watching movies just feels exhausting. I’ve made nearly 50 films over more than 40 years, and I’m burned out.”
Washington also downplayed the importance of awards, despite Lee recalling how he lost the Academy Award for Malcolm X in 1993 to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman. “Awards don’t mean much to me,” Washington said. “I don’t act for Oscars. You win when it’s your time, and when you don’t, that’s fine. Awards are given by people, but true rewards come from God. On my last day, an Oscar won’t mean anything.”
His remarks sparked heated discussions among fans and industry insiders, many admiring his honesty while others expressed shock that one of the greatest actors of his generation no longer enjoys the medium that made him a legend.

Highest 2 Lowest, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, marks Washington’s fifth collaboration with Spike Lee and is already one of the most anticipated films of the year.
