On August 24, his wife, actress Mak Ching-ting, revealed that Jackie battled a rare and dangerous lung infection between June and August 2025. The illness led to a coma and multiple organ complications, forcing him into isolation wards, negative-pressure rooms, and intensive care. Doctors described his condition as “extremely severe.” During the ordeal, the actor lost nearly 18 kilograms.
Mak disclosed that her husband faced the brink of death several times, with his life hanging by a thread. “For two months, we lived between life and death,” she said, adding that she kept his illness private to avoid alarming fans. Thankfully, Jackie’s condition has stabilized, and he has been discharged to continue recovery at home.

Concerns over his health first surfaced in late May when Jackie appeared frail, with sunken eyes, pale skin, and noticeable weight loss. At the time, his team declined to comment, further fueling speculation.

Born in 1966, Jackie Lui rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s as one of ATV and TVB’s leading stars. His most iconic role was Linghu Chong in The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, which remains widely regarded as the definitive portrayal of the character—surpassing performances by Li Yapeng and Wallace Huo. His other notable works include Invincible, Life Gamble, and Justice Sung.

Despite his immense popularity, Jackie gradually stepped back from the entertainment industry, leaving fans puzzled about his retreat from the limelight.
In his personal life, Jackie has shared a nearly 30-year romance with Mak Ching-ting. The two met in 1994 and married in 2008. The couple, known for their youthful looks and enduring love, often drew admiration for appearing “ageless” together—thanks to Jackie’s unusual lifestyle of maintaining a strict vegetarian diet and forgoing parenthood for almost three decades.
