The 2025/26 Premier League season will kick off with a host of significant changes aimed at stamping out unsporting behavior, speeding up play, and improving the fan experience, according to The Athletic.
Match officials have been instructed to strictly crack down on simulation, exaggerated contact, and shirt-pulling inside the penalty area. These fouls will now be dealt with more decisively, potentially leading to an increase in penalty awards. Last season, Chelsea received seven yellow cards for diving, while Manchester City was booked six times for similar offenses.

One of the most notable updates is the introduction of an eight-second limit for goalkeepers holding the ball. Once a goalkeeper controls the ball without immediate pressure, a countdown begins. If the time limit is exceeded, the opposing team will be awarded a corner kick. Conversely, attacking players who obstruct the goalkeeper’s release will concede an indirect free kick.
Other enhancements include:
- Head injury protocol: Medical staff will enter the pitch immediately if a head injury is suspected, with the player required to remain off the field for at least 30 seconds.
- Referee body cameras: Starting from Round 3, select referees will trial head-mounted cameras to offer new perspectives.
- On-field decision announcements: Referees will now publicly explain their decisions via the stadium’s PA system.
- Match ball change: Puma replaces Nike as the official match ball supplier.
These measures are designed to make matches faster, fairer, and more transparent, reinforcing the Premier League’s reputation as the most exciting football competition in the world.
