The Japanese idol industry is once again shaken by controversy. Mugino Tsumugi, a newly added member of the girl group ICECREAM SCREAM, has been removed from the group just one week after her debut, following revelations about her past involvement in adult films.

According to China Times, Mugino Tsumugi was introduced as a new member on July 22, but her tenure was short-lived. Japanese netizens quickly discovered that she had previously acted in at least three adult films under the stage name “Miyuki.” The content was reportedly found on a popular adult platform, sparking immediate backlash online.

Fans criticized Mugino Tsumugi for not disclosing her adult film past before joining the group, leading to intense scrutiny. In response, the group’s agency issued an official statement:
“After confirming that Mugino Tsumugi concealed her previous activities before joining the group, we have decided to terminate her contract effective immediately. We sincerely apologize for the lack of rigor in our selection process, which caused concern to our fans.”
Shortly after the announcement, Mugino Tsumugi’s social media accounts were deactivated, further confirming her complete withdrawal from the entertainment scene.
The news has ignited mixed reactions among fans and the public, with some criticizing the agency for poor background checks, while others debate the fairness of judging an idol based on their past.

ICECREAM SCREAM, based in Hokkaido, debuted in March 2011 and has maintained a modest but loyal following in Japan. This incident, however, adds to a growing list of controversies within the J-pop industry related to idols’ pasts.
This isn’t the first time such a scandal has rocked the idol scene. In a similar case, Nagase Kako, a member of Iroha Sakura, was discovered to have ties to adult content. She was subsequently dismissed for what her agency described as a “serious violation of internal rules.”
As the Japanese entertainment industry continues to evolve, this incident raises ongoing questions about privacy, second chances, and the stringent expectations placed on female idols.
