“The goddess you worship holds no power here.” With that chilling line, the first trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash ignited a storm across the internet on July 28 (KST), offering the first glimpse into the next explosive chapter of life on Pandora.

The trailer, dropped by Disney, marks the return of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) in the aftermath of Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). But this time, the stakes are even higher not only for the Sully family, but for the fate of Pandora itself.

A Family on the Brink

The trailer reveals growing tensions within the Sully household. The death of eldest son Neteyam has fractured the once-solid family bond. Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), haunted and rebellious, clashes with his father Jake, while Neytiri continues to grieve in silence. Meanwhile, a budding romance between Lo’ak and Reya (Bailey Bass), daughter of Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and Ronal (Kate Winslet), raises alarms among her parents, who fear war will follow Jake’s bloodline.

Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), thought to be gone for good, returns with a larger, more brutal army reigniting the human-Na’vi conflict. However, a new player enters the battlefield: the mysterious Ash People, led by the enigmatic Varang (Oona Chaplin).

Unlike the oceanic Metkayina or the forest-dwelling Omaticaya, the Ash People are fire-worshipers, adorned in ash-dusted war paint and clad in volcanic garb. Their cultural aesthetic is starkly different, hinting at an entirely uncharted side of Pandora.

A Darker, Deeper Pandora

The trailer teases a potential civil war within Pandora as Varang, seemingly a reluctant pawn of the human military, clashes violently with Neytiri in a breathtaking bow-and-arrow standoff. Her fiery powers including one scene where she scorches part of the forest hint at supernatural abilities never before seen in the franchise.

Director James Cameron, who first teased the Ash People during the D23 Expo in 2024, promises the most emotionally rich and visually extravagant installment yet. “You’ll see parts of Pandora never explored before. It’s a wild ride a visual feast, but also the most emotionally resonant journey so far,” Cameron stated. With a reported budget of $250 million, Avatar: Fire and Ash is shaping up to be the biggest blockbuster of 2025. It is set for a global release in late December.

Following the success of Avatar (2009), which grossed over $2.9 billion, and The Way of Water (2022), which raked in $2.3 billion, expectations are sky-high for this third chapter. And if the trailer is any indication, Pandora’s most explosive chapter has only just begun.
