According to reports from Taiwan’s Yipin News and China’s Sohu News on May 20, paparazzi obtained private messenger conversations between Barbie Hsu’s mother, Hwang Chun-mei and Mandy, ex-husband Wang Xiaofei‘s new wife.
In the leaked messages, Hwang first congratulated Mandy on her recent marriage to Wang on May 17, but followed up the next day by sending a photo of a luxury car and asking, “Is your husband trying to avoid paying back the money he owes?”
The demand refers to over 12 million yuan (approximately $1.7 million USD) in unpaid service fees reportedly owed by Wang Xiaofei. The debt prompted a court-ordered asset seizure, and one of Wang’s luxury vehicles—an Aston Martin sports car—was placed up for auction. After the first auction failed, Wang halted a second auction attempt by requesting a 1.6 million yuan ($222 million USD) deposit.
Hwang Chun-mei allegedly used this as a springboard to request payment from Ma on behalf of her husband, sparking criticism from the Chinese media. One reporter commented, “Do you think about your daughter during the day and money at night?”
The controversy deepened when netizens recalled a previous statement from Hwang. When asked if she planned to fight her two grandchildren over Barbie’s inheritance, she had replied, “I’m already over seventy. Why would I fight them? I’ve decided to leave them only love.” Her recent actions, however, seem at odds with that sentiment.
This isn’t the first conflict involving Wang and Hwang. Despite past allegations from Wang—such as accusing Hwang of stealing Barbie’s jewelry—Hwang has chosen not to take legal action. Her response: “I don’t praise losers.”
Barbie Hsu married Wang Xiaofei, a Chinese businessman, in 2011 and had two children with him before divorcing in 2021. She later married Koo Jun-yup in 2022, but tragically passed away during a trip to Japan in February 2025. Koo, deeply affected by her loss, is said to have lost 12kg in the months since and now resides in Taiwan. He visits Barbie’s resting place at Jinbaoshan daily and is currently working on a memorial statue in her honor.
