US Court Addresses Leaks of “Demon Slayer” & “Jujutsu Kaisen” – 1st Cases of Anime-related Leaks

A US court has ordered to disclose information about leak accounts for anime series "Demon Slayer" and "Jujutsu Kaisen

Recently, a court case emerged after “leak accounts” posted unreleased anime episodes to social media before their official broadcast or online distribution Aniplex and Toho, members of CODA (the Content Overseas Distribution Association). As a result, the distributors filed a request for disclosure in a U.S. court in June 2024.

On August 20, the court issued an order for the disclosure of the account holders’ information, and the procedures for delivery were initiated on August 30.

The “leak accounts” in question had posted unauthorized video clips or images from “Demon Slayer” and “Jujutsu Kaisen” on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which were not available to the general public before their official release. These posts spread widely and accumulated a large number of views.

CODA assisted in gathering information and evidence on these accounts for the disclosure request. This is the first time that a U.S. court has issued such an order for leaks related to Japanese anime.

CODA has received reports of similar damages regarding other anime, and is currently gathering additional information and evidence. The organization intends to take strict measures against the account owners based on the information obtained, in collaboration with the affected rights holders, and will pursue severe penalties for those operating leak accounts.
