“Drunk-Driving is Murder”, Criticisms Intensify Amid BTS’s Suga & Kim Ho-joong’s Controversies

On the 26th, MBC Every1’s “Hidden Eye” aired a segment showcasing dangerous drunk driving arrests.

Here, MC Kim Sung-joo stated, “Drunk driving is as problematic as theft,” and highlighted that since 2021, the recidivism rate for drunk driving has exceeded 40%, becoming a serious social issue.

In response, Kim Dong-hyun argued, “Drunk driving should be treated as a criminal offense like murder,” and expressed his desire for stricter penalties, noting that people often take a casual attitude, thinking, ‘I’m okay.’ He suggested that using a designated driver should be mandatory.

So-You also commented, “Drunk driving seems to become a habit,” to which Lee Si-won added, “With a recidivism rate of 40%, it feels like a form of addiction.”

The segment also covered not only drunk driving checkpoints but also incidents of drivers fleeing the scene to avoid arrest, including footage of a driver caught for driving in the wrong direction while intoxicated.

Recently, the issue of drunk driving has become a major topic in the entertainment industry.

According to authorities, the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office in Anyang has indicted Park Sang-min for violating traffic laws (drunk driving) without detention.

Park Sang-min is accused of driving in a drunken state around 8 a.m. on May 19 and driving near his home in Gwacheon. He reportedly fell asleep in a back alley before heading home, and was caught by police after a witness report. At the time of arrest, his blood alcohol content was at a level that would warrant a license suspension.

This is not Park Sang-min’s first offense for drunk driving. In February 2011, he was caught driving with a blood alcohol level that exceeded the license suspension threshold in Gangnam, Seoul. He was also arrested in August 1997 for causing an accident while driving drunk in the same district.

Additionally, BTS’s Suga was found drunk and riding an electric scooter around 11:15 p.m. on August 6 near his home in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District, Seoul. His blood alcohol content at the time of the accident was recorded at 0.227%, well above the legal limit for license suspension (0.08%).

Furthermore, trot singer Kim Ho-joong was arrested on June 18 for drunk driving and hitting a taxi on Apgujeong-ro in Gangnam District, Seoul, on May 9. After causing the accident, he fled the scene and had his manager turn himself in, leading to his indictment.
