BLACKPINK’s Lisa Drops “New Woman” MV: Jaw-dropping Visuals but Disconnected Music?

At exactly 9 AM on August 16th (Korean time), BLACKPINK’s Lisa released the MV for “New Woman,” her 2nd solo music release of 2024, just over a month after “ROCKSTAR”. This project also marks a collaboration between Lisa and Grammy-winning Spanish singer Rosalía.

In the posters and MV teasers that were released, Lisa had fans doing double takes with her dramatic new visuals, and the full MV continued to shock viewers with its creative investment in everything from the setting to Lisa’s outfits, offering a stark contrast to her previous solo work.

The song “New Woman” takes listeners back to the nostalgic Pop-Punk sound of the Y2K era. Compared to “ROCKSTAR”, it’s clear that Lisa went all out with “New Woman,” featuring dozens of different scenes and numerous outfits, showcasing a variety of looks.

“New Woman” continues the strong “woman power” message that was present in “ROCKSTAR”. Some fans even noticed subtle hints about the number of upcoming MVs and the title of the album in the MV.

However, Rosalía’s solo segment in “New Woman” has been criticized for feeling out of place, with an unexpected shift in rhythm that left listeners momentarily disconnected. Some even felt that Rosalía’s solo seemed like an entirely different song spliced into the MV. It’s not until later, when Lisa and Rosalía sing together, that the song regains its flow and harmony.

Overall, this MV release showcases another side of Lisa that fans haven’t seen before, and it can be seen as a musical experiment.

However, when Lisa and Rosalía’s voices combine, the song becomes more harmonious and catchy, showing good chemistry between the two.
