On July 5, a topic titled “New Jeans aren’t that popular with foreigners??” was published on the Korean forum Pann Nate.
The author of the topic attached various images of random dance events overseas, where random songs are played in a public space and whoever knows how to dance will come forward to perform, and pointed out that a lot of foreigners danced to songs from aespa, ILLIT, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, and NMIXX, while this doesn’t apply to NewJeans.
“The groups of people that dance to NewJeans songs are really small”, the author added before questioning if NewJeans is truly popular outside of Korea.
Upon reading the topic’s suspicions, however, most Korean netizens come to defend NewJeans. Below are some of their comments:
- Yeah, the girl group that topped the list of most streamed K-pop artist on Spotify in 2024 was NewJeans~
- I keep seeing posts like this, so I guess NewJeans is doing well lol
- The choreography of NewJeans’ recent songs is less exciting compared to other groups’ songs, so less people learn the dance
- When I see people writing shit like this, I wonder if they have no brains.
- Hmm..? I live in Europe and there’s no one among the kids who listen to K-pop who doesn’t listen to NewJeans.
