Fans of BTS’ Jungkook and SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu Battle Over “Pop Star” Title

The clash between the fans of BTS’ Jungkook’s fans and SEVENTEEN's Mingyu fans is causing a stir on social media.

Recently, Mingyu, a member of the million-seller boy group SEVENTEEN, made a sensational appearance at Calvin Klein’s event in Paris, France. Since the beginning of the year, Mingyu has been a viral sensation due to his heart-throbbing visual appeal. Following his viral “WOP” challenge video and stunning groom-like look at the Dior show in February, Mingyu naturally draw attention. The SEVENTEEN rapper became the talk of the town with his muscular body and impressive height of 1.87 meters, standing out at public events.

To Kpop fans, Mingyu is not a stranger. Born in 1997, he is one of the most fan-favorite members of SEVENTEEN. He shares a commendable friendship with Jungkook, the youngest member of BTS.

In fact, Jungkook, Mingyu, and Cha Eunwoo, who are all remarkable names in the Korean entertainment industry, are known to be close friends, making for an impressive “97-line” friendship.

Recently, however, Jungkook’s fans “attacked” Mingyu on social media. The conflict started from a post by Calvin Klein, introducing Mingyu as a “pop star”. This displeased some of Jungkook’s fans, as after Jungkook’s solo promotions at the end of last year, international media favorably dubbed Jungkook as the “new generation pop star.”

Jungkook is also a global ambassador for Calvin Klein, leading to fans of BTS disagreeing with the brand addressing Mingyu using a “similar title to Jungkook”. As a result, under the brand’s post and on SNS platform X (formerly Twitter), Jungkook’s fans left negative comments, criticizing the brand and even degrading Mingyu’s reputation. This upset SEVENTEEN’s fans, sparking a “fan war” on social media.

SEVENTEEN’s fans vigorously defended their idol, explaining that “pop star” is a general term for a pop music star, not exclusive to any individual. As successful and influential Kpop idols, both Jungkook and Mingyu can be called pop stars. Arguing over a title isn’t worth the online violence, they said

Moreover, Jungkook and Mingyu are close friends. Before enlisting, Jungkook often joined Mingyu on outings and they even held a live stream together in Jungkook’s house. In their careers, they have always supported each other’s milestones.

Therefore, Mingyu suddenly being bashed by Jungkook’s fans hurts the bond between the two large fandoms.
