On February 2, Barbie Hsu traveled to Tokyo, Japan with her family to celebrate the Lunar New Year. However, she succumbed to complications from pneumonia caused by influenza. According to Taiwanese media outlet ET Today on February 4, Koo Jun-yup is set to return to Taiwan with Barbie Hsu’s ashes on February 6.
As the couple had captured public attention with their movie-like love story, the news of her passing has left many in deep sorrow.
In an October 2022 interview with Vogue Taiwan, Barbie Hsu and Koo Jun-yup reminisced about their special memories in Japan. When Koo Jun-yup asked “Which country did we visit on our first trip abroad together?“, Barbie Hsu replied “Tokyo“, to which Koo Jun-yup nodded in agreement.
Barbie Hsu shared, “Back then, the show we were doing aired live every day, so we could only travel on weekends to the closest country. Tokyo was convenient, so we went there often.” Koo Jun-yup added, “I have a fun memory from one of our trips. We bought matching track jackets, and later, Barbie wore hers in the drama ‘Meteor Garden’.“
The fact that Barbie Hsu passed away in Tokyo, a city filled with their joyful memories, just four days before their third wedding anniversary has made the loss even more heartbreaking for the public.
Meanwhile, Koo Jun-yup announced his marriage to Barbie Hsu on March 8, 2022. The two used to be lovers but went separate ways 20 years ago. After Barbie Hsu divorced her former husband in November 2021, Koo Jun-yup quickly reunited with her and got married right after that.
