Heo Sung Tae in “Squid Game”

The megahit K-drama “Squid Game” managed to change the life of all its cast – from leading actors and actresses, to supporting cast members. Among these is actor Heo Sung Tae – who played the villainous player number 101.

Apparently, this seasoned actor, who was born in 1977, gained 15 to 17kg in less than a month for the role, and even confessed to media outlet Ladbible that his health was badly impacted because of this. In the end though, Heo Sung Tae’s efforts paid off, as his character made a deep and memorable impact in “Squid Game”, contributing to the series’ overall sensational popularity. 

Lee Sung Kyung in “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo”

“Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo” is an inspiring coming-of-age K-drama that took inspiration from a true story. The series follow Kim Bok Joo – a strong female lead who aims to become a top weightlifter – and so require the leading actress Lee Sung Kyung to adopt a larger body.

In order to pull off this inspiring role, Lee Sung Kyung put on weight instead of using a body suit. In the end, her natural acting and hard work secured her a Best Actress Award in a miniseries at the MBC Drama Awards. 

Lee So Jung in “Plump Revolution”

Gorgeous actress Lee So Jung is yet another iconic case of gaining weight to suit a role. In particular, in “Plump Revolution”, Lee So Jung greatly surprised the audience as she transformed into a chubby girl that faced various hardships in her life.

Go Kyung Pyo in “6/45” 

Go Kyung Pyo is a familiar name when it comes to changing weight for his role, and his latest movie “6/45” is no exception. The actor admitted to gaining weight on purpose for the comedy project after receiving a lot of attention for his changed appearance.

In particular, Go Kyung Pyo said, “I think my weight gain is a good thing as it suits the image and personality of my character Chunwoo. In fact, I tried to gain as much weight as possible to lose my jaw line, so that I can show Chunwoo’s over the top innocence.”

In the end, it is partly due to Go Kyung Pyo’s efforts that “6/45” managed to attain huge success in both Korea and overseas.
