“20th Century Girl” Kim Yoo-jung, “It looks like we’re in love with each other in that scene… I cried just by looking at Roh Yoon-seo” (27th BIFF)
Actress Kim Yoo-jung expressed feelings about leading Netflix’s movie “20th Century Girl”.
On the afternoon of October 8th, Kim Yoo-jung attended the open talk for the movie “20th Century Girl” held at the outdoor stage of Haeeundae Film Center in Busan.
Netflix film “20th Century Girl” was invited to the Special Premiere category for Korean films at the 27th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Director Bang Woo-ri and the cast Kim Yoo-jung, Byun Woo-seok, Park Jung-woo and Roh Yoon-seo attended the event.
“20th Century Girl” tells the memories of 1999 on a videotape that arrived one winter. It’s a movie about a 17-year-old girl named Bora, who becomes the cupid to make the first love of her best friend Yeondu come true.
Kim Yoo-jung, who transformed into the female lead Bora in the youth drama set 20 years ago, said, “I was born in 1999, the era that the movie is set in. In fact, I have no idea about what happened that year. I asked the director about how things were and what experiences she had at that time”, adding “The director told me a lot about the emotions of that time. I was personally glad to experience that era”.
She continued, “I already wanted to do it the moment I read the scenario for the first time. Bora was such an adorable and cute character. Even her friends and family members were emotionally warm and cute. I thought I could feel healing during the filming and I actually enjoyed the filming process. During the preparation, I had many conversations with the director and also discussed every line and expression with her.”
In addition, Kim Yoo-jung shared, “Bora is so lovely and loyal that I just hope she can be my friend”, adding “This is a work that I really love and cherish. The people in this movie remain in my heart as a good memory without me realizing it. I think I will take them out to look sometimes. Those memories will give me lots of strength”, showing her affection for the movie.
Roh Yoon-seo, who acted as Kim Yoo-jung’s best friend in “20th Century Girl”, confessed, “She’s an actress whom I have seen on TV since I was young, and it was an honor for me to work with her for the first time. The longer we worked together, the closer we became. Every time we filmed an important scene, I was completely immersed in it. There were so many things I felt and learned from her during the filming. I only have good memories of her. Our chemistry was very great”.
Kim Yoo-jung shared, “There was a time when I cried just by looking at her. At the end of the shoot, we looked at each other in a sentimental atmosphere. Bora and Yeondu look like they’re in love with each other in that scene. Friendship is also a kind of love, and I think I could feel it while we acted together”. Director Bang Woo-ri also said, “I received confessions from both actresses. Each of them thanked me for casting the other”, drawing laughter. Kim Yoo-jung and Roh Yoon-seo then casually looked somewhere and confessed “I love you” to each other.
“20th Century Girl” will be released on Netflix on October 21st.
