10 years after its release, PSY’s “Gangnam Style” is still unparalleled in views, receiving congratulation from YouTube

A decade ago, Korean singer PSY dropped his MV for “Gangnam Style”, which still remains in the top 5 most viewed MVs on YouTube. 

Back on July 15th, 2012, Korean song “Gangnam Style” was released, boasting a signature choreography, quirky music, and fun MV. The song soon became a global sensation, exceeding 1 billion YouTube views within 6 months. After 10 years, the official MV of “Gangnam Style” still remains among the Top 5 most viewed music videos, standing at 4.4 billion views on YouTube.

Talking about becoming the first artist to have an MV over 1 billion views on YouTube, PSY expressed that the feat was “incredible”, and that he was glad to have helped “pave the way for barrier-transcending music”. He also actively promoted the song and its iconic “horse dance” choreography in various nations across the globe.

YouTube has produced an official congratulatory video for Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’. Psy is receiving enthusiastic congratulations from the public by sharing this on the official SNS with the caption, “What were you doing when you first encountered Gangnam Style?” Psy, who is holding ‘Psy Soak Show SUMMER SWAG 2022’ in Seoul this weekend, said, “It was a special Seoul performance that made a special day even more special.”

After “Gangnam Style”, many other MVs of different genres have reached the 1 billion view mark. As of the moment, J Balvin and Justin Bieber have 11 videos surpassing this mark, followed by Ozuna with 10 videos, and Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Maluma with 8.

The most-viewed MV on YouTube is now “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi ft. Daddy Yankee, which was released back in January 2017, at 7.9 billion views. Meanwhile, the fastest MV to surpass 1 billion views is Adele’s “Hello”, which achieved this number within 88 day.
