Joshua Zirkzee’s underwhelming performance in Manchester United’s match against Everton has triggered a storm of criticism, with fans calling manager Ruben Amorim’s decision to let the Dutch striker play the full 90 minutes “a crime.”
With both Sesko and Cunha sidelined due to injury, Zirkzee was handed a rare start but failed to deliver. Over 90 minutes, the 22-year-old touched the ball only 35 times, lost possession 12 times, completed just 60% of his passes, and didn’t register a single dribble. His first shot came in the 80th minute, and he squandered two clear-cut chances with ineffective headers.

Despite the opportunity, Zirkzee looked out of sync with teammates like Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo, and Diallo, who carried the creative workload. His failure to link play or exploit spaces between Everton’s center-backs further frustrated the Red Devils faithful.
Former United and Liverpool striker Michael Owen didn’t hold back: “Honestly, I’ve never found Zirkzee interesting as a player. He’s not what United need.”

Fans took to social media with sharp sarcasm:
“Describe Zirkzee in one word? Invisible.”
“If Zirkzee is the answer, I don’t even want to know what the question was.”
“Letting him play 90 minutes should be a sackable offense.”
Many are now calling for his sale in the January transfer window, believing he has wasted his chance to prove himself.
Zirkzee may have been forced into the spotlight due to injuries, but after this display, it’s clear that the spotlight may now be firmly off him possibly for good.
