Actress Zhao Yingzi is once again making waves and not in a good way. Known for her fading career and penchant for grabbing headlines through unfounded gossip, the star has added another name to her list of alleged “boyfriends”: actor Chen Xiao.

During a recent livestream, a fan commented that she and Chen Xiao would make a great couple due to their contrasting personalities him being introverted, her extroverted. Zhao Yingzi, clearly excited, said she admired him and even called him “one of my rumored boyfriends.” Cue the collective sigh from netizens.

Zhao Yingzi has previously made similar claims about other big-name actors like Lin Gengxin, Cheng Yi, and Hu Yitian all of which were quickly dismissed as attention-seeking tactics. Now, Chen Xiao has seemingly become her latest “victim.”

Netizens reacted with a mix of disbelief and laughter:

  • “She went from Dou Xiao to Chen Xiao? Give it a rest.”
  • “I’m speechless at this point.”
  • “She really thinks she’s the main character in a fantasy drama.”
  • “Why do all these guys keep getting dragged into her stories?
  • “She’s done this way too many times. Enough already.”

For those unfamiliar, Zhao Yingzi and Chen Xiao previously worked together in the 2014 version of The Return of the Condor Heroes, where Chen Xiao played the lead role Yang Guo and Zhao portrayed Cheng Ying, a side character who had a one-sided crush on him. Ironically, it seems Zhao may have taken the storyline a bit too seriously.

They also reunited for the 2021 drama Heroic Journey of Nezha.

Although Zhao Yingzi boasts a long list of credits in dramas like God of War Zhao Yun, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber, and New Legend of Madame White Snake, she has struggled to secure a place as a true leading lady. Critics now accuse her of relying on name-dropping and fabricated romance rumors as a last-ditch effort to stay in the spotlight.

In a time when authenticity is highly valued, Zhao’s attempts to manufacture buzz through fabricated connections are rubbing fans the wrong way. One harsh but popular comment online summed it up: “She’s not the heroine in a rom-com. She’s just the extra trying too hard to stand out.”
