Chinese entertainment is still reeling from the shocking death of actor Yu Menglong, who passed away on September 11 after falling from a high-rise building in Beijing.
Just one day after the tragedy, however, Chinese social media reignited with a chilling resurfaced post from July 2020. In it, a self-proclaimed fortune-teller claimed Yu Menglong was “likely to face great misfortune in 2025.” The post further described him as introverted, prone to overthinking, and easily falling into melancholy — a description many fans connected to his reclusive public image in recent years.
The resurfacing of the post divided netizens. Some saw it as uncanny evidence of fate, with comments like: “It was written in 2020 and came true exactly. Destiny really exists,” and “Maybe people’s lives are predetermined.” Others linked his tragic roles in period dramas, often marked by short-lived or sorrowful characters, to his own untimely passing, calling it a “destiny written in advance.”
Skeptics, however, dismissed the prediction as a publicity trick. They argued that fortune-telling accounts often publish vague forecasts about many celebrities under private settings, then retroactively edit and publicize those that appear to “come true.”

One comment compared the practice to so-called financial “experts” online: “They throw out dozens of predictions, hide them, and only reveal the ones that match real events. There’s nothing mystical here.”
Others urged caution, warning that connecting Yu Menglong’s death to unverified fortune-telling posts only exploits his tragedy. The most-liked comment on Weibo stressed: “Whether or not you believe in fate, the most important thing is to respect Yu Menglong. Don’t turn someone’s pain into clickbait.”
Despite the debate, the undeniable truth remains that the industry has lost a talented actor at just 37 years old. His sudden passing leaves behind unanswered questions and a poignant reminder of the need for compassion over sensationalism.
