Youn Yuh-jung: “Changes after winning the Oscars? I hate getting old, but…”

Actress Youn Yuh-jung revealed that her daily life has remained unchanged since winning the Academy Awards.

On March 18th, Youn Yuh-jung and actor Jin Ha conducted a video interview for Apple TV+’s original series “Pachinko” (directed by Kogonada and Justin Chon).

Pachinko” is based on the bestselling book of the same name of the New York Times by Lee Min-jin. The story begins with a forbidden love story, and goes back and forth between Korea, Japan and the United States, drawing unforgettable epic stories about war, peace, love, separation, victory and judgment.

Youn Yuh-jung took on the role of Sunja, the main protagonist of “Pachinko“, and showed off an overwhelming presence with her delicate acting skills.

In the interview, when asked “What do you think about the phenomenon of Korean content running around Youn Yuh-jung?”, she laughingly replied, “There is no way for Korean content to go back through me.” Youn Yuh-jung joked, “I filmed ‘Pachinko’ before the Academy Awards, when you weren’t interested in me. It’s just that the original novel of this drama is about a woman looking back on her life as she grows old, so I was drawn like the protagonist. I don’t think it revolves around me. I’m not that stupid.”

To the question “Has anything changed since you won Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards thanks to ‘Minari’?”, Youn Yuh-jung answered, “Nothing has changed. I’m hanging out with the same friends and living in the same house.” Then she continued, “One thing I’m grateful for is that if I had received the Academy Awards at a young age in my 30s and 40s, I would have been floating. I hate getting old, but it’s my first time being thankful for my age. The moment I received the award, I was happy, but that doesn’t change me. I’ll just live and die as myself.”

Besides, Youn Yuh-jung said she met Steven Yeun, whom she worked with in “Minari” a few days ago, adding, “Steven Yeun was nominated for Best Actor last year. When meeting him recently, I told him, ‘I’m glad you didn’t win the award. It’s an honor just to be nominated.'” She confessed, “I was just lucky. Director Bong Joon-ho knocked on the Academy, and fortunately, ‘Minari’ went up due to the pandemic. And according to Americans, ‘Savage Grandma’, a strange grandmother took home the award.”
