Veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung has sparked a heated debate after her behavior at the 30th Busan International Film Festival drew widespread attention.
Known for her decades-long career and internationally acclaimed performances, Youn has been accused by some netizens of displaying “actor syndrome”—a term used in Korea to describe actors showing arrogance or dismissive behavior due to their status.
The controversy began on September 19 during the press conference for the Hollywood film Wedding Banquet. When asked by a reporter to highlight the charms of the film, Youn Yuh-jung responded, “I’m not a salesperson,” adding, “I’m not part of the promotion team. My mission ends with acting. How people perceive the film is their choice, not mine.”
Her comments drew criticism for appearing dismissive in a setting meant to promote the film. The debate intensified when Youn arrived 15 minutes late for the stage greeting, without offering an apology to hundreds of waiting audience members.
In contrast, veteran actors like Park Geun-hyung, Ye Su-jeong, and Jang Yong fully engaged in promoting their respective films, highlighting the contrast in professional conduct.
Some viewers criticized Youn Yuh-jung’s remarks, arguing that global actors actively promote films internationally, and that a simple explanation of the film’s appeal would have sufficed. Others defended her, noting that actors primarily express themselves through their craft rather than marketing, praising her honesty and dedication to acting.
This is not the first time Youn has faced scrutiny. In 2013, during an SBS Healing Camp appearance, she openly discussed feeling frustrated over receiving an Excellence Award at the KBS Entertainment Awards, citing a perceived disparity between younger and older recipients.
Internationally, actors like Emma Watson have also expressed reluctance toward promotional duties, highlighting the stress associated with marketing projects versus acting itself.
Despite the controversy, Youn Yuh-jung remains one of Korea’s most accomplished actors. With 59 years in the industry, she has appeared in 105 dramas, 36 films, and 8 plays. She made history as the first Korean actor to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and the first Asian actor to win both the Screen Actors Guild Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress, earning her global recognition as a world-class performer.
