Once known as the “Prince of Japanese Dramas,” actor Oguri Shun rose to fame across Asia after portraying Hanazawa Rui in the hit series Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers). With his ethereal looks and calm charm, he became a dream man for countless fans and was hailed as one of Japan’s most handsome stars.
However, the actor’s once-flawless image came crashing down when his private life was exposed in a scandalous karaoke room incident that shocked the entire nation.
A Wild Karaoke Party Exposed
On June 30, 2022, Japan’s entertainment industry was rocked after explicit photos of Oguri Shun surfaced online, allegedly taken during a raucous karaoke party. The images, showing the actor in a compromising state, were leaked by notorious YouTuber Yoshikazu Higashitani widely known for exposing celebrities’ private lives.
“He was dancing, kissing women, and acting wildly while drunk even stripping off his clothes. How can such a man call himself a role model or a family man?” Higashitani criticized in his broadcast.
According to NHK, the party took place at an exclusive adult-only karaoke lounge located in a luxury resort in Hiroshima. Reports said at least three men and four women participated in the all-night drinking event. One attendee allegedly took photos of Oguri Shun’s behavior and later sold them to Higashitani.
The exposé went viral across social media, leaving fans stunned.

Following the leak, Higashitani reportedly earned USD 74,000 (₩100 million / ¥11 million) for releasing the scandal. Enraged, Oguri Shun confronted the acquaintance who had sold the images, feeling deeply betrayed by someone he considered a close friend.
This was not the actor’s first controversy. Back in 2014, he was caught in an infidelity scandal, accused of secretly meeting two women at a hotel while his wife, model Yamada Yu, was nine months pregnant. Later, another woman claimed to possess a “sex tape” featuring the actor and tried to sell it for USD 20,000, though no outlet confirmed the footage’s authenticity.
With multiple sex scandals and affairs surfacing over the years, Oguri Shun’s image as Japan’s ideal husband and gentleman was destroyed beyond repair.
Begging for Forgiveness
Oguri Shun married Yamada Yu in 2012 after four years of dating, and the couple share three children. Once admired as Japan’s “golden couple,” their marriage nearly collapsed following the karaoke scandal.
After the story broke, Yamada Yu reportedly took their children to the United States to escape the media frenzy and refused to communicate with her husband.
“He cried and kneeled down, begging for another chance,” a source close to the couple revealed.
Eventually, Yamada Yu agreed to return to Japan and continue their marriage, though insiders say their relationship was never the same.
