On the October 6 episode of YouTube show Pinggaego, actor Yoo Yeon-seok candidly shared details about his family background, surprising many viewers by admitting he grew up in what Koreans often call a “golden spoon” household.
During the episode, Yoo Yeon-seok appeared alongside Cha Tae-hyun and was instantly delighted when sikhye (a traditional Korean sweet rice drink) appeared as a product placement. The actor explained, “I really love sikhye. My fan club is even named after it—‘Sikhye-deul,’ which means kids who love sikhye.”
He went on to reveal a quirky family tradition inspired by the film Dances with Wolves, where each family member created playful nicknames for one another. “My mom would always wake up late at night to have snacks, so we called her ‘Eating at Night.’ My dad liked drinking with meals, so we called him the ‘Soju-Drinking Professor,’” Yoo Yeon-seok shared, drawing laughter from the hosts.

Comedian Yoo Jae-suk then confirmed, “Your father really is a professor?” —to which Yoo Yeon-seok explained that his father taught engineering, while his mother was a painter. Yoo Yeon-seok himself grew up in Seoul’s prestigious Gangnam 8th school district, further highlighting his privileged upbringing. His older brother, he added, once broke his leg and earned the nickname “Standing with Crutches.” As for Yoo Yeon-seok himself, he was affectionately dubbed “Knocked Over by Sikhye” because of his love for the drink.
The lighthearted episode also featured a surprise phone call from Cha Tae-hyun’s youngest daughter, during which Yoo Jae-suk warmly greeted her and even jokingly promised a future gift.
Cha Tae-hyun wrapped up the moment by saying, “This just shows how close and warm Yoo Yeon-seok’s family is. Naming each other like that means they really shared joy together.”
Yoo Yeon-seok’s candid confession not only revealed his golden spoon background but also showcased the warmth and humor of his family life, leaving fans with an even more endearing image of the actor.
