MBC’s variety show “Hangout with Yoo” hosted by Yoo Jae Suk received a warning for PPL (indirect advertising through product placement).
On May 5th, the Korea Communications Standards Commission addressed what was covered at the regular meeting held on April 26th, the issue over PPL for LG Electronics products in “Hangout with Yoo”.
Specifically, the Acorn Festival episode of “Hangout with Yoo” that aired in December of last year included a PPL of a TV, a new product of LG Electronics.
During the broadcast, Yoo Jae Suk pointed to the TV and said, “We have something to introduce,” with Jeong Jun Ha and Lee Mi Joo being startled and saying things such as “Wow, this is so cool” and “How thin is this?”. After that, the MV for the campaign song by John Legend, LG’s brand ambassador, appeared on the TV screen.
The Korea Communications Standards Commission issued a ‘caution’ corresponding to legal sanctions after the process of taking opinions from the production team of “Hangout with Yoo”. This is because of the judgment that it might have violated Articles 47/1/3 and 47/2/3 of the Regulations on Broadcasting Deliberation.
MBC protested, “We try to show the basic side, but since it is a reality show, the guests and cast are allowed to act freely on the filming set. It is the production team that decides whether to remove the scene or not during the post-editing process”.
However, the Commission said, “Casts and guests should also be guided to comply with the deliberation regulations. Cutting out the PPL part, it would look just like a TV commercial”, adding,” We hope the producers will review PPL with stricter standards”.
Meanwhile, Yoo Jae Suk, who is the main MC and cast of “Hangout with Yoo”, was recently involved in another controversy related to tvN’s program “You Quiz on the Block”. It was because President-elect Yoon Seok Yeol appeared on its broadcast, which aired on April 20th.
After that episode, Yoo Jae Suk was criticized by both conservatives and progressives for his role as an MC. After it was revealed that “You Quiz” had refused to let President Moon Jae In and former Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae Myung appear on the show, CJ and the program continued to be embroiled in political controversy.
