Will Kim Soo-hyun Hit Big With His Comeback In Kim Ji-eun’s Drama “Queen Of Tears”?
Drama fans are having high expectations for “Queen of Tears” as it’s Kim Soo-hyun’s third time appearing in Park Ji-eun’s drama
“Queen of Tears”, which depicts the romance of Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won), a third-generation chaebol and “queen of Queen’s Department Store”, and Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun), son of Yongdu-ri and a “prince of supermarket” as they face crisis and start again in the third year of their marriage. This drama marks the third collaboration between star writer Park Ji-eun and top actor Kim Soo-hyun, following “My Love from the Star” (2013) and “The Producers” (2015).
“Queen of Tears” has created hot topics ever since its casting stage. In April 2022, IU was mentioned as soon as the news of Park Ji-eun’s new drama broke out, however, IU politely declined the casting offer. The media then reported Kim Soo-hyun’s casting but his agency replied, “We did not receive any offer”. In November, 7 months later, Kim Soo-hyun’s side reversed their stance and announced that they were reviewing the script. Kim Ji-won was cast as the female lead in “Queen of Tears” after IU turned down the offer.
Apart from the casting, “Queen of Tears” also caused a stir with its airing schedule. The drama was included in the lineup of tvN’s dramas in the second half of 2023 released in 2022. In particular, it was scheduled for December 2023. However, tvN suddenly replaced “Queen of Tears” with “Maestra” starring Lee Young-ae without a notice. In January of 2024, the drama was finally confirmed as a March release.
Despite all the pre-production issues, Kim Soo-hyun is still raising anticipation for his first time acting as a married couple in a drama. At the press conference, the actor also expressed his confidence in the project, saying “I worked very hard over the past year.”
Kim Soo-hyun was not able to create much buzz despite his Jeolla Province dialect performance in his previous film “One Ordinary Day.” It may be because of Coupang Play’s limitations as a small streaming service platform, but the movie was almost a failure compared to the popularity of other Coupang Play productions such as “Anna” and “Boyhood.” His drama “It’s Okay to be Not Okay” (2020) also made a below-expected achievement with the highest viewer rating of only 7.3%.
