Will BLACKPINK become the 1st K-pop act to win Best International Group at the BRIT Awards after BTS lost twice?

BTS has tasted the bitterness of losing three consecutive years at the Grammys, but it is still too early to be disappointed. This is because BLACKPINK is aiming to set another K-pop ‘first’ record.

The BRIT Awards, the UK’s most prestigious pop music awards ceremony, will be held on February 11th (local time) at the O2 Arena in London, England.

This year’s ceremony, BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to be nominated. The category for which BLACKPINK was nominated is Best International Group. If BLACKPINK wins this year, it will be the first-time ever for a K-pop group.

Before BLACKPINK, BTS was the only K-pop act in history to be nominated for Best International Group at the BRIT awards. BTS received a nomination twice in 2021 and 2022, but unfortunately didn’t win.

The industry is optimistic about BLACKPINK winning the award this year. Currently, BLACKPINK’s popularity in Europe is amazing. Recently, a charity organization chaired by Brigitte Macron, the first lady of France, held a gala concert in Paris, France. President Macron and his wife attended the event and took a commemorative photo with BLACKPINK members.

Last year, BLACKPINK topped not only the US Billboard album chart ‘Billboard 200’ but also the UK official album chart with their 2nd full album “BORN PINK”. In addition, they are currently going on the largest world tour of a K-pop girl group, attracting about 1.5 million fans.

After successfully completing 14 North American shows in 7 cities and 10 European shows in 7 cities in 2022, BLACKPINK will be performing at the ‘Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival’ in the US in April and the ‘Hyde Park British Summertime Festival’ in the UK in July. BLACKPINK will be standing on stage as a headliner.

However, the competition is also formidable. In the Best International Group category of this year’s BRIT Awards, BLACKPINK is up against Drake, 21 Savage, and Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit.

An official from the music industry said, “BLACKPINK is breaking the Guinness record with an unprecedented world tour, and they are about to become the first K-pop singer to headline America’s largest music festival, Coachella. Being able to enjoy a huge global fandom itself means that BLACKPINK’s public recognition has already grown that much in North America and Europe.”

Meanwhile, the BRIT Awards, which began in 1977 under the auspices of the British Record Industry Association, are called the UK’s representative music awards ceremony. A panel of more than 1,000 members, including radio and TV DJs and presenters, executives at broadcasting companies, representatives of record companies, and journalists, picked the nominees by voting.
