K-pop fans are all too familiar with the “7-year curse” that affects idol groups. This refers to the standard contract length between idols and their agencies. By the 7th year, groups must make a crucial decision: either renew their contracts or part ways. Very few groups, especially girl groups, manage to survive past this milestone.

In November 2023, BLACKPINK kept fans on edge as they awaited news of contract renewals. Ultimately, the global girl group made a compromise they re-signed their group contract with YG Entertainment while ending their individual exclusive management contracts. This decision allows BLACKPINK to continue group activities while giving all four members the freedom to pursue independent careers.

Recently, Rosé graced the cover of the American magazine The Cut, where she opened up about BLACKPINK and her musical journey. When asked about a world tour in 2025, Rosé excitedly confirmed the plans. She explained that while each member needed time to explore their individual paths, BLACKPINK must reunite. As she playfully put it, the reason BLACKPINK hasn’t disbanded is that they “need to stir things up even more”.

Before renewing their contracts, BLACKPINK had long and sincere discussions to avoid misunderstandings.
“It was a healthy process. We talked honestly about what we needed and wanted in life, ensuring that, at the end of the day, everyone was happy.”
By stepping away from exclusive contracts with a major K-pop powerhouse, the four members embraced new challenges, took charge of their own music production, and pursued creative freedom. Fans (BLINKs) have been flooded with high-quality solo projects that showcase each member’s unique artistry.

Now that their solo ventures are well underway, the group is gearing up for a new world tour this year. Rosé even hinted that BLACKPINK is preparing new music. In the end, BLACKPINK not only broke the 7-year curse but also ushered in a new era of independence more explosive than ever.
