A wildlife photo taken in Mountain View, California, by photographer Sha Lu has gone viral for its emotional and unsettling depiction of the natural world. At first glance, it shows a white hawk soaring midair – a very normal event. However, when zoomed in, the photo reveals a gripping detail: the hawk is carrying a vole, whose haunting expression has stunned viewers worldwide.

Captured in June 2025, the image portrays a male white-tailed hawk with a vole in its talons. According to Sha Lu, the hawk was in the middle of an aerial food transfer to one of its fledglings.
“I found the expression of the vole to be quite striking, showing it was very scared and helpless, and appears to be looking at the camera directly”, Lu shared.
On the other hand, voles are small mammals measuring just 13 to 23 cm. With a lifespan of about three months, they are frequent prey for hawks, falcons, snakes, and foxes. While voles don’t display facial expressions the way humans do, the look captured in this image has been described by many as “helpless” and “chilling,” a silent testament to nature’s unforgiving order.

Meanwhile, white-tailed hawks aren’t large by raptor standards, as adults measure up to 43 cm and rarely live beyond six years. They are mostly found in select regions of the U.S., such as southern Florida, Texas, and parts of California and Oregon, where they prefer open grasslands and prairies.
As noted by “All About Birds”, these hawks begin hunting at dawn, gliding low over fields in search of prey. Drivers often spot them hovering along highways, scanning for movement below.
While the photo has been shared widely for its striking composition, it also resonated with viewers on a more philosophical level. The image confronts us with the raw reality of the food chain, where survival for one means death for another.
