Viewers Doubt Family Programs Due To Cast’s Controversies: From Kang Kyung-joon’s Affair To Choi Min-hwan’s Divorce

Following the success of “Dad! Where Are We Going?” in 2013, many family entertainment programs allowing viewers to see the daily lives of star families and the growth of celebrities’ children were produced. Many stars did benefit from such family programs. However, the good impression of those happy celebrity families has recently been ruined by controversies.

Greater sense of betrayal

Celebrities who appear in family entertainment programs usually have the image of a “family person” or an “affectionate husband/wife”. Therefore, once a celebrity with such a family image causes controversy, the impact is even more severe.

Actor Kang Kyung-joon was recently sued for having an affair with a married woman. Kang Kyung-joon married actress Jang Shin-young in 2018 and has two sons. He even revealed his family life on SBS’s “Same Bed, Different Dreams 2” and KBS2’s “The Return of Superman”. Amid the growing controversy over his affair, netizens express concerns over his wife and children. While some are worrying about his children, whose faces have been disclosed on TV, others complain of a sense of betrayal.

In the case of S.E.S’s Shoo, she married former basketball player Lim Hyo-sung in 2010 and has one son and two daughters. Her family appeared on SBS’s “Oh My Baby” in 2015 and impressed the public with their harmonious lives. While enjoying huge popularity with her children through the show, Shoo shocked everyone as she was sentenced to prison in 2019 on charges of gambling.

Was it real?

There are cases of celebrity couples getting divorced after appearing on family entertainment shows. This makes many viewers begin to doubt the authenticity of such programs and wonder whether the scenes those couples showed on the program were real or scripted.

F.T. Island’s Choi Min-hwan and LABOUM’s Yulhee, who showed their married lives with three children through KBS’s “Mr. House Husband”, recently announced their divorce. The fact that Choi Min-hwan took custody of the three kids also caused various speculations to arise.

Rapper-turned-producer Rhymer also divorced broadcaster Ahn Hyun-mo after starring in “Same Bed, Different Dreams 2” and another family program on tvN. In particular, the two opened up about their conflicts and stresses but showed their willingness to recover their family harmony. However, they eventually failed and parted ways.
