“Vietnam War distortion”… Vietnam asks Netflix to stop airing “Little Women”

Vietnam requested Netflix to stop showing the Korean drama “Little Women” in the nation.

According to local media outlets such as Bloomberg News and Tuoi Tre on Oct 5th, Vietnamese authorities demanded that “Little Women” be stopped in the nation, saying that the Vietnam War described in this drama was distorted from reality.

In particular, Vietnam’s position is that the distortion of the Vietnam War was noticeable in episodes 3 and 8. In these episodes, General Won Ki-seon, a key character in the drama, directly brought the “blue orchid”, known as the ghost orchid, after he made a contribution in the Vietnam War.

This orchid is depicted with a negative meaning that causes mysterious deaths, and General Won is also considered to be the core of corruption in the drama. Vietnam seems to have requested the suspension of “Little Women” after combining the drama’s contents and the reasons such as depicting the Vietnam War differently from the truth.

Meanwhile, the drama “Little Women” is gaining popularity due to the adaptation based on the 1868 novel of the same name of writer Chung Seo-kyung, who wrote the films “Lady Vengeance” and “Decision to Leave”. The series depicts the story of three poor sisters who are close, their involvement in the case of 70 billion won going missing, and how they bravely face Korea’s richest family.

Little Women

Currently, “Little Women” is drawing attention overseas beyond Korea, especially in Asia. According to the OTT content ranking site Flix Patrol on Sep 29th, “Little Women” ranked first in the Netflix TV program category in 4 countries: Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and Japan.
