Veteran Actor Criticizes Modern Actors – ‘They Cling to Initial Success, Can’t Sustain a Lifelong Career in Acting’

This actor delivered a sharp rebuke to overnight stars.

Appearing on JTBC’s ‘Newsroom’ on the 30th, Lee Soon-jae shared his acting philosophy.

Approaching 90 years old, Lee Soon-jae commented, “That’s how it happened. I’m enduring because I’ve maintained my health.” He added, “There was no assumption that I’d be acting at this age. Our profession is like that. Even if we’re exhausted, we stand up when we get to the set. It’s the nature of the job.”

Lee Soon-jae, who delivered a touching performance at the ‘Baeksang Arts Awards,’ said, “I had cataract surgery not long ago, so my vision was poor. Being on stage, there might have been some sympathy for an old actor. Yoo Yeon-seok and I have a teacher-student relationship, and I think it was that bond that made me emotional.”

At the time, Lee Soon-jae remarked, “I’m just an actor who worked hard,” which resonated deeply. He humbly stated, “I wasn’t a standout actor. I just had to work hard. The nature of creation means there are great artists in the moment, but it’s not the end of the field. I see the realm of artistic creation as infinite, without perfection or end. Acting is the same. It’s not ‘that acting is the pinnacle,’ but rather, ‘that was good acting.’ Everyone has their own artistic quality in acting.”

Currently, Lee Soon-jae has started the play ‘Who Doesn’t Know This Person.’ He expressed, “I hope people understand the preciousness of liberal democracy. Having experienced the Korean War, it’s an eternal tragedy in our nation’s history.”

Regarding his acting philosophy, Lee Soon-jae said, “You have to be punctual. I prepare in advance to perfect my part. In the past, actors would rehearse lines together. On ‘High Kick,’ I constantly rehearsed lines with Na Moon-hee. Doing that allows for a flawless performance without NGs.”

Lee Soon-jae also expressed his desire for a sitcom on JTBC, saying, “I’d love to do a silver sitcom. It would feature grandfathers, their families, and the joys and sorrows of life. It would be great to try this with Shin Goo and Park Geun-hyung.”

Regarding younger actors, Lee Soon-jae commented, “There are some who do it properly and some who do it half-heartedly. Many can’t sustain their careers. They become obsessed with their initial success, clinging to it. Instead, they need to transform and try new roles. When seniors set an example, the juniors follow. So, the seniors need to do well too.”
