“Unexpected Business 2” causes controversy over airing illegal scenes which violated the Tobacco Business Act

Illegal scenes were broadcast on tvN’s entertainment program “Unexpected Business 2”, which depicts the operation of a countryside supermarket.

On the March 10th broadcast of “Unexpected Business 2“, Cha Tae-hyun, Jo In-sung and part-timers Kim Woo-bin, Lee Kwang-soo, Lim Joo-hwan continued to run the supermarket together.

Their countryside supermarket business faced difficulties on the second day. It started when an old man bought a pack of cigarettes. The old man ordered, “Give me a lighter as well.” Kim Woo-bin and Lee Kwang-soo, who were busy looking for a lighter in the supermarket, asked, “Have you ever bought a lighter here?” The old man replied, “The lighter is just a service.”

Eventually, Kim Woo-bin, who found a lighter, handed the lighter to the old man as a service for purchasing a pack of cigarettes. Lee Kwang-soo even applauded and congratulated him for overcoming the obstacle.

This scene, which can sometimes be seen not only in countryside supermarkets but also in convenience stores in downtown areas, is clearly illegal. The act of providing a lighter as a service constitutes a violation of Article 18 of the Tobacco Business Act, as it is the sale of cigarettes below the advertised price. The first violation can result in a 3-month business suspension while the second violation can result in a 6-month business suspension and a fine of up to 1 million won.

An official from the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “When selling cigarettes at source, supplying free gifts is clearly considered illegal.” The Ministry of Strategy and Finance has been conducting several promotional activities for violations of the Tobacco Business Act.

Viewers who watched “Unexpected Business 2” had mixed reactions. The act of providing a lighter as a service after buying a pack of cigarettes is sometimes done not only in rural areas but also in convenience stores in downtown areas. The cast and production team may not even know that such an act was illegal.

However, some criticized that there has been no thorough investigation into illegal activities as “Unexpected Business 2” is a TV program, and that the content may be broadcast as it is, causing confusion among viewers.

In this regard, an official from the Korea Communications Standards Commission said, “After the show, if there is a possibility of becoming a problem after receiving complaints related to the content, we will review the matter.”
