SBS’s investigative program Unanswered Questions is set to air a shocking episode on December 6, unveiling the disturbing circumstances behind a case in which a locally famous “angel singer” has been arrested for allegedly killing her own daughter.

Suspicious Injuries Found on the Victim

On September 22 at 4:54 p.m., a woman in her 40s drove her unconscious daughter to an emergency room in Namhae, pleading with doctors to save her. Despite immediate medical attention, the 20-year-old university freshman referred to as Lee Seo-yeon (alias) was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A hospital staff member recalled: “She kept insisting her daughter was still alive. When the body was moved to the morgue, she fainted again.”

But what deeply concerned medical personnel were the fresh bruises and severe burn marks found all over the young woman’s body.

25 Hours of Alleged Neglect And the Appearance of a Cohabiting Partner

The mother, surnamed Kim, was quickly arrested on suspicion of abandonment leading to death. Investigators discovered that Seo-yeon had been injured at a cultural center where Kim had gone to install audio equipment. She was then left in a vehicle for approximately 25 hours before being taken to the hospital.

Kim denied responsibility for the injuries, claiming instead that her common-law partner, surnamed Ahn, had beaten the victim so severely that she nearly lost her eyesight, and had allegedly sexually assaulted her. Kim, from detention, wrote letters insisting she was “wrongfully accused.”

Authorities are now working to verify conflicting testimonies.

A Mother with a Flawless Public Image And a Hidden Secret?

Kim was widely admired in her community, known for her volunteer work and warm personality. Locals described her as a “heavenly-hearted singer,” someone who not only held medical credentials from a prestigious Seoul university but also won beauty pageants and represented various local organizations as an ambassador.

A close acquaintance said: “She was so caring and kind that we even called her our ‘angel singer.’”

The contrast between this image and the brutal injuries found on her daughter has left many stunned. Was the mother falsely accused, or was she hiding a darker truth beneath her philanthropic reputation?

Who Is the Real Culprit?

With both Kim and her partner pointing fingers at each other, investigators must now untangle a web of contradictions, potential abuse, and long-hidden family secrets.

Unanswered Questions will examine:

  • The cause and timing of the daughter’s injuries
  • Whether prolonged abuse or sudden violence played a role
  • Testimonies from acquaintances, family members, and investigators
  • The credibility of Kim’s letters from detention

The episode titled “The Two Faces of the Angel Singer – The Truth Behind a Daughter’s Death” airs on December 6 (Sat), 11:10 PM (KST).
