A shocking murder case in Korea has resurfaced in public debate after disturbing comments made by the convicted killer, Kim, were revealed.

The Crime: “If She Won’t Take Me Back, I’ll Kill Her”

Kim, who had been in a four-year relationship with victim A, was unable to accept her decision to break up. After sending repeated text messages begging for another chance and being rejected, Kim confided in friends that he intended to kill her.

On July 20, 2017, Kim armed himself with a knife and broke into A’s home in Ulsan through a gas pipe. Finding A’s younger sister B asleep on the sofa, he stabbed her to death. When A came running after hearing screams, Kim briefly fled, only to climb back in and fatally stab A 12 times as she was on the phone with emergency services.

The brutal attack lasted just 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

50 Days on the Run

After the murders, Kim abandoned his car and hid in the mountains for over 50 days, surviving on canned coffee, bottled water, and stolen food from nearby construction sites. He was eventually arrested on September 13, 2017, after a villager reported a suspicious encounter.

In January 2023, the Ulsan District Court initially sentenced Kim to death, calling the murders “a meticulously premeditated act of extreme cruelty.”

However, on appeal, the Busan High Court reduced the sentence to life imprisonment, citing mitigating factors. The Supreme Court later upheld the life sentence, rejecting the prosecution’s push to reinstate the death penalty.

Shocking Remarks in Detention

Public outrage reignited after Kim’s alleged comments from the detention center became known:

  • “I don’t want life imprisonment — no drinking, smoking, or women.”
  • “When you search Ulsan on Naver, my name is number one.”
  • “I’m thinking 20 years… By the time I’m out, smartphones will have advanced so much.”

These remarks, perceived as arrogant and remorseless, have further fueled anger among citizens, with many questioning whether justice was truly served.
