A K-drama actress is known for her “ugly-looking” roles with weird personalities, and yet is a true boss off the screen.
“Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow”, the sequel to “Alchemy of Souls”, is drawing a lot of attention from audiences. Likewise, cast members, even those outside of the main cast, have become a hot topic, and actress Shim So Young is no exception.
In particular, in “Alchemy of Souls”, Shim So Young assumes the role of Seo Ha Sun, wife of Go Sun, who is full of schemes. However, she was put into the body of an “ugly” magic user in season 1, and retains this “ugly” appearance in season 2.
“Alchemy of Souls” is not the first time Shim So Young plays “ugly” characters. In fact, she is known for playing various K-drama roles with questionable appearance and personality, including Lim Bok Ja from “Taxi Driver”, “Eo Duk Sin” in “Tale of the Nine Tailed”, and Myung Ae in “Behind Every Star”. While most actresses try to look the prettiest on the screen, So Young opted for a completely different route, making people recognize her name despite her late acting debut.
Born in 1970, yet Shim So Young only recently appeared on the screen. She was originally a theater actress, and her first on-screen appearance was in 2018. While Shim So Young mostly plays supporting characters, she still boasts a huge variety of notable works such as “Hyena”, “Take Care of My Mom”, and “Green Mothers’ Club”. She was also honored at SBS Drama awards 2021 for her dedication and passion in her 50s.
Despite playing mostly hilarious and quirky roles, however, Shim So Young is an elegant person in real life. In fact, she must go for a minimalist but cool “boss” style, which makes her look way younger than her age.
