The Weeknd explains sex scene in “The Idol”, “There’s nothing sexy about it”

According to The Weeknd, his sex scene with Lily-Rose Depp in “The Idol” episode 2 was supposed to make people feel uncomfortable.

On June 13th, American media GQ published an interview with The Weeknd, who is a major cast member and executive producer of HBO’s “The Idol”. The interview brings to light The Weeknd’s perspective about his project, particularly on the controversial sex scene in episode 2.

In particular, The Weeknd described his character as somebody who “has nothing” and is “pathetic”. Then, when asked about the sex scene in episode 2, the pop star emphasized that “There’s nothing sexy about it”, adding, “How ever you’re feeling watching that scene, whether it’s discomfort, or you feel gross, or you feel embarrassed for the characters. It’s all those emotions adding up to: This guy (The Weeknd’s character) is in way over his head, this situation is one where he is not supposed to be here.”

According to The Weekend, many scenes in “The Idol” are “intentional”, aimed to show how his character is a douchebag, who needs to rehearse and calculate or else he has nothing.

“You look at him, and this is a score—Jocelyn might be the biggest score he’s ever had. It’s very obvious”, The Weeknd said, adding, “Even the sex, it’s so gluttonous. Especially in episode 2. ‘Gluttony’ is the only word I can think of . He can’t believe he’s there. He comes off like such a loser.”

Explanations aside, audiences have been expressing immense disappointment in “The Idol”, which is produced by “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and The Weeknd. Some fans even turned against the pop star due to the series’ message, which they believe to be degrading towards women.
