The truth behind 2NE1’s shocking and upsetting disbandment

2NE1’s sudden disbandment still causes immense regret every time it is mentioned.

2NE1 was once a one-of-a-kind Kpop girl group, with a unique concept and music. Debuting in 2009, 2NE1 went through many ups and downs in their career and eventually decided to wrap up the journey as a group in 2016, when YG announced their official disbandment.

Recently, stories related to 2NE1’s disbandment unexpectedly resurfaced. Before the members officially parted ways, there were times YG instilled faith about a bright future for the group. But in the end, we all know what actually happened. Therefore, former CEO Yang Hyun Suk came under the most criticism as he was seen as the one who made the decision to separate 2NE1. Is it the truth?

Active from 2009 to 2016, 2NE1 had a successful career

It all started with the regrettable scandal of Park Bom. In 2014, at the peak of her career as a 2NE1 member, Park Bom was suddenly involved in a shocking drug controversy. 2NE1’s main vocalist was accused of smuggling drugs containing capsules of amphetamines blending with gummy bear jellies from the US into Korea.

Despite her attempt to clarify and explain that it was part of her prescription medication and she did not know it was a drug banned in Korea, Park Bom still had to face the public’s outrage. As a result, the female idol had to halt her activities and go on a hiatus. Other members started to focus more on solo projects. This incident may have indirectly sparked the chain of events that caused 2NE1 to disband.

However, fans still had hope that one day, when controversy and public criticism subsided, 2NE1 could still return and make waves in the industry with their quality music.

After 2NE1’s surprising appearance on the stage of MAMA 2015, with the performance of iconic hits “Fire” and “I Am The Best“, fans had more reasons to look forward to an official comeback of the group.

2NE1’s unexpected stage at MAMA 2015 lit up a ray of hope for fans about 2NE1’s post-scandal comeback

However, only a few months later, Minzy announced the termination of her contract with YG. Former CEO Yang posted a letter of apology to fans, denying rumors of 2NE1’s disbandment and reassured fans that the group would make a comeback in the summer of 2016 with a 3-member lineup. Yet in the end, all fans received was utter disappointment when YG confirmed 2NE1’s official disbandment in November 2016, despite the seemingly believable promises that Yang Hyun Suk made before.

Not long after the disbandment, leader CL revealed that after Minzy left, Yang Hyun Suk said he would produce an album with the remaining 3 members. The 3 members then ceased their individual activities to focus on the group’s album. However, unexpected problems arose and things got canceled halfway.

As for Yang Hyun Suk, he said that he wholeheartedly protected 2NE1 after Minzy transferred to another agency. But after seeing how seriously Park Bom’s mental health was affected by the scandal, he had no choice but to agree to disband the group. However, he still expressed his hope that maybe the members could reunite like S.E.S in the future.

On January 21, 2017, 2NE1 officially bid farewell to fans through the song “Goodbye“. Although the maknae Minzy could not take part in the recording, YG still included her image in the MV as an affirmation that 2NE1 will forever be a 4-member group.

The members also in turn thanked their fans for supporting 2NE1 during the past years. Yang Hyun Suk himself reportedly contacted 3 members and gathered them to record one last song as a gift to fans after the sudden disbandment.
