“The Roundup”, which is about to exceed 10 million viewers, earns 7 times its production cost without filming in Vietnam

The movie “The Roundup” is making amazing profits without filming abroad.

According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network for movie tickets on June 10th, “The Roundup” again topped the box office by mobilizing 111,862 people the previous day.

The cumulative number of audiences of “The Roundup” is 9,686,863. With this momentum, it is expected to surpass 10 million viewers this weekend.

If “The Roundup” surpasses 10 million viewers this weekend, it will be the first movie in 2 years and 6 months since “Frozen 2” and the 20th Korean movie since “Parasite” to achieve this.

Starring Ma Dong-seok, Son Seok-koo and Choi Gwi-hwa, “The Roundup” depicts a pleasant crime eradication operation carried out by monster detective Ma Seok-do (Ma Dong-seok) and the Geumcheonseo Criminal team to catch Kang Hae-sang (Son Seok-koo), a vicious killer who has been committing crimes in Vietnam. Ma Dong-seok also participated as a producer.

The overall background at the beginning of the work is Vietnam, but the “The Roundup” team could not go to overseas locations due to COVID-19. Earlier, Ma Dong-seok explained, “We made everything to look like Vietnam in Korea. In the case of external scenes, we put CG on them.

Everything from warm sunlight to houses with a lot of Vietnamese sentiments was filmed in Korea. For this reason, the break-even point of “The Roundup” was inevitably low.

Considering premiere subsidies, overseas pre-sales and additional copyright income, the number of viewers at the break-even point of “The Roundup” is estimated to be around 1.5 million. With this figure, it is estimated that ticket sales will exceed 100 billion won if the number of visitors exceeds 10 million.

The total production cost of “The Roundup”, including the P&A (marketing) cost, doubled from the previous season to 13 billion won, but it is earning 7 times its production cost in theaters alone.

Released at a time when social distancing was lifted, “The Roundup” is receiving favorable reviews by capturing viewers’ eyes and ears due to Son Seok-koo’s creepy villain acting and Ma Dong-seok’s stunning bare-fisted action scenes. Moreover, “The Roundup” is expected to increase profits further as it is showing its persistence in reclaiming the top spot of the box office, beating the movie “Broker” starring Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won and IU.
