“The reason rappers go to variety show”, rapper Crown J’s latest video exploded in views

A YouTube video featuring Korean rapper Crown J is drawing heated responses.

On August 19th, famous Korean rapper Crown J attended an interview with HIpHOPPLAYA, which was then uploaded to YouTube and other platforms, attracting attention. HIPHOPPLAYA then edited a short excerpt of their interview with Crown J, and released a YouTube Short titled “The reason rappers go to variety shows”.

As of 5PM (KST) on September 1st, the video has attracted more than 750,000 views and 600 comments, becoming a hot topic in Korea.

In particular, Crown J revealed in the video that he believed “hip hop is an expression”, and that he isn’t talking about just the music, but also about hip hop itself, including the life and culture.

“I personally think that hip hop is an expression. So those who express music are rappers, dancers, B-boys… they’re all doing what they’re good at in their own ways. Expressing this genre with the ability God gave you is what hip hop truly is,” the rapper said.

He then continued: “You can’t show everything through music, because music is short. So that’s why I joined a reality show. […] I was very positive about it because I could show it to the public through this show.”

Hearing this, a lot of netizens agree with Crown J’s remark, and praised him for being among the first rappers to take on the mantle of bringing hip hop, which was mostly underground, to the public’s sight.

Previously in 2008, Crown J appeared as a “fake couple” with singer Seo In Young on the MBC program “We Got Married”, which was broadcast as a special Lunar New Year show. At that time, the two were highly popular, receiving plenty of public interest and love.
