The reason iPhone’s Siri answered many times and caused a stir in theaters of “Avatar 2” viewers

Korean moviegoers reported an accident related to Siri function on iPhone that happened when they watched “Avatar 2” in the cinemas.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” (“Avatar 2”), the sequel to “Avatar”, was released for the first time in Korea on December 14th.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” depicts the journey and battle of Jake Sully and Neytiri on Pandora planet, leaving to survive due to ruthless threats.

On the first day of its release, the movie attracted over 360,000 viewers in Korea. This number surpassed the record set by “Avatar” (205,000 viewers), which became a box office hit in 2009.

While attention is focused on whether “Avatar”, which was the first foreign film to surpass 10 million viewers in Korea in 2009, will continue its popularity, reviews from audiences who watched the movie as soon as it premiered are pouring out.

In particular, the notice “Turn off your shoppingmode, iPhone” was shared as a thing that you should pay attention to while enjoying “Avatar 2”, drawing attention.

On December 15th, netizen A posted on online communities the message that if people watch the movie without turning off their Siri function, they might be caught up in an embarrassing situation.

A said, “That’s what I experienced myself”, adding “There’s a child named Kiri in the movie, and whenever the child’s name was called, my Siri answered”.

In “Avatar 2”, Kiri is the daughter adopted by Jake and Neytiri. In an interview, the director revealed that Kiri was born from the avatar of Dr. Grace, who was brain-dead. Accordingly, no one knows who her father is.

In other words, the voice recognition function on iPhone reacts when the characters in the movie call “Kiri ya” because “Siri ya”, the way Korean people called their Siri, sounds similar to “Kiri ya”.

In fact, Siri often responds to similar pronunciations rather than accurate pronunciations. Therefore, people should be careful when going to watch “Avatar 2”.

Meanwhile, a similar accident occurred in theaters when people went to watch Park Chan Wook’s “Decision to Leave”, which was released in June. Many people left reviews, saying “I suggest you turn off your iPhone for a while or your Siri function”, “If you don’t want to experience Siri answering or playing music out of a sudden, just leave it for a while”, etc.

In this regard, CJ Movie even posted a notice on SNS, saying “Please turn off Siri before watching the movie”.
