Screenwriter Moon Ji-won of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” revealed the behind story of Dong Geu-ra-mi, the name of Woo Young-woo’s best friend.
Screenwriter Moon Ji-win attended the press conference for ENA’s “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” held at Stanford Hotel in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul at 2 p.m on July 26th. At the event, she mentioned the name Dong Geu-ra-mi, saying “I didn’t name the female lead’s best friend ‘Dong Geu-ra-mi’ because autistic people tend to like circles”. (“dong-geu-ra-mi” means “circle” in Korean)
Earlier, netizens on online communities and SNS sites argued that the name “Dong Geu-ra-mi” was given to the character based on the fact that people with autism are particularly obsessed with circle-shaped objects like little kids.
Therefore, at the press conference, screenwriter Moon Ji-won explained, “I think the character Dong Geu-ra-mi is Young-woo’s best friend and spiritual pillar but in some ways, she is even more extraordinary than Young-woo. So I thought ‘I’ll give her a name that people will never forget once they hear it!’. Several names were nominated and I chose ‘Dong Geu-ra-mi’ among them.”
Regarding the reason why she introduced Woo Young-woo as an “extraordinary attorney”, writer Moon said, “I believed the word ‘extraordinary’ was the most suitable one to describe Woo Young-woo”, adding “Extraordinary things are unfamiliar and heterogeneous; sometimes they make you feel scared and want to avoid them. But at the same time, I thought I could present many creative ideas because the character is ‘extraordinary’ and I had the courage to change the worldview into a better one.”
“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” depicts the survival of Woo Young-woo (Park Eun-bin), a genius lawyer with autism spectrum disorder, at a large law firm. The drama, which aired the first episode on the 29th of last month, is enjoying its syndrome-class popularity thanks to the actors’ passionate acting and its solid story.
Meanwhile, ENA’s “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” airs every Wednesday and Thursday at 9 p.m.
