The pain and pressure BLACKPINK members face behind their on-stage glamor

Popularity often comes with pressure and BLACKPINK is no exception.

Behind the success of being dubbed the world’s No.1 girl group, having millions of fans around the globe and plenty of expensive contracts with global brands, BLACKPINK still can’t avoid hardships and pressure. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the four members opened up about their struggles with both physical and mental health after debuting.

BLACKPINK doesn’t have a leader, so the group’s oldest member Jisoo is in charge of taking care and connecting the members. However, Jisoo herself admitted she has not been in her best state lately due to her leg injury.

Jisoo revealed she was going to go to the hospital after the interview to have her leg checked. She was suffering from the pain for a month. Jisoo added that BLACKPINK has yet to start practicing choreography for their upcoming comeback, so luckily, she doesn’t need to dance for now but she hopes to heal fast.

Jisoo also shared about the physical pain she suffered from when BLACKPINK performed at Coachella in 2019. She said, “When we were performing at Coachella, my back hurt so badly. Every night, I was getting painkillers.”

Jisoo added how her responsibility to perform made her overcome the pain, “I wanted to perform sitting down. But my pride wouldn’t allow myself to sit. And it wasn’t because ‘I love this stage so much’, stronger was my sense of responsibility and duty.”

Like Jisoo, Jennie is also concerned about health. She worries about how to stay healthy amid BLACKPINK’s busy schedules because she gets sick easily due to poor immune system. Jennie said, “I became both physically and mentally sick after the last world tour ended in 2020. This isn’t something I want to share too much because fans worry. But for 3 years after debuting, we worked nonstop without resting.”

As for Rosé, the social distancing period due to the pandemic that stopped her from engaging in activities caused her a huge amount of stress. BLACKPINK’s main vocal said, “It was terrible. I’ve never rested like that in my life. It was the worst. Stress hits me. It came with me not knowing what to do without work. I was a workaholic. I couldn’t stand the fact that suddenly all of our schedules were empty for the next 2-3 months.”

The pressure of suddenly being forced to take a long break from activities made Rosé question what will happen if people are no longer interested in her, or BLACKPINK, by the end of the pandemic.

As the only foreign member of BLACKPINK, Lisa also dealt with a lot of pressure. Although Lisa is known to be extremely talented because she can both rap and sing well, she was once afraid to go inside the recording studio.

She said in the interview, “In the past, I used to only rap. One day, Teddy told me to try vocals. But there was a time when I was really bad at singing. That whole year between As If It’s Your Last and DDU-DU DDU-DU was rough for me. When I went to the studio to record, nothing came out. I cried. I felt like I was bringing BLACKPINK down.”
