“The Little Mermaid” criticized for inaccuracies after “black Ariel” controversy

On March 15th, an article pointing out various inaccuracies in the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” was published on the Korean forum “theqoo”, gaining attention.

In particular, the writer of the article highlighted inaccuracies in 3 characters of the movie, with Ariel being the first target.

According to them, in the original animated film, Ariel had a tail that split into two strands at the end. However, the black Ariel in the poster and trailer has a long, translucent fin and tail that begins at the waist, glowing with an opalescent hue.

This tail is a signature of the “Betta fish”, which inhabits freshwater regions in Southeast Asia, such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, and so cannot survive in the ocean. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense for the mermaid princess Ariel to have a betta tail yet live in the sea.

The writer then cited a tweet claiming that Sebastian in the original animated film is a Tuna crab, which resembles a lobster. However, the Sebastian in the live-action trailer is a Ghost crab, which is another inaccuracy, seeing that ghost crabs cannot swim, even though they occasionally venture into shallow waters to avoid predators.

However, this seems to be based on incorrect information, as Disney previously clarified that Sebastian is a Red Jamaican Crab. Red Jamaican Crabs, which resemble the Sebastian featured in “The Little Mermaid” live action, are capable of swimming in the ocean.

Finally, the character that caused the most confusion among internet users was Flounder.

Flounder, who is Ariel’s best friend, had a yellow body with blue stripes. The name “Flounder” refers to flatfish or sole, but despite the name, it was simply portrayed as a tropical fish.

However, the Flounder in the live-action adaptation has lost its cute appearance.

The aforementioned Theqoo user speculated that the Flounder in the trailer is a Parrotfish. Although it may not be an inaccuracy, the drastically changed appearance has surprised fans.

Seeing the trailer for the live-action of “The Little Mermaid”, many Internet users have expressed their disappointment. Be lơ are some comments from netizens:

  • An animation should have just stayed as an animation
  • I don’t understand why they have to make everything into a live-action
  • The new trailer’s Sebastian and Flounder looks like something you’d see in seafood soup
  • Is it necessary to change the visuals? Can’t they keep the character a little cartoonish?

On the other hand, the live-action version of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is set to be released on May 26th in North America.
