The intricate relationship of Jennie and The Weeknd, who “tainted” her image

It was The Weeknd who invited Jennie to join HBO’s “The Idol”, a drama which is stirring up controversies left and right.

The Idol” was an important milestone for The Weeknd as an actor. In 2019, the 1990-born singer played a minor role as himself in “Uncut Gems.” When “The Idol” came, he took responsibility for many positions, from acting and co-writing to producing. He has enough power to make a role for Jennie in this Hollywood production.

Despite a seemingly hard-fought attempt to give Jennie a part, she does not have a central place in the story. She was only a minor character compared to the main plot about the fall of a star (Lily-Rose Depp) and the cult leader behind it (The Weeknd). Jennie’s appearance was unremarkable in the first few episodes and only became unforgettable when it was about sexual and inappropriate choreography.

As a consequence, Jennie became the talk of the town, but not in a good light. She was criticized for making a questionable acting debut that directly brought down her innocent and classy image.

When reporting on Jennie’s acting debut, the Korean media revealed Jennie made this choice on her own terms. TenAsia reported that Jennie met The Weeknd and got the role; in other words, it was Jennie who wished to join the project.

In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Jennie expressed her hope that “The Idol” would be a new challenge that broke down her barriers.

Jennie and The Weeknd share a long-term connection that dates back long ago. In 2021, the two went out for dinner in Los Angeles, California, and shared a hug before going their separate ways.

In 2022, Jennie posted an update with the caption, “Magical Weekend” to which The Weeknd replied with a star emoji. This piqued fans’ interest in their future collaboration.

Back when Jennie was a trainee, she chose “The Hills” by The Weeknd for her evaluated performance, which was released in the documentary “BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky” in 2020.

A year later, Jennie continued to sing The Weeknd’s iconic song, “I Can’t Feel My Face”, on MBC’s “Weekly Idol”. Later on in 2018, she was also spotted attending The Weeknd’s concert alongside fellow BLACKPINK member Rosé, and even shared moments at the concert on SNS.

It seems that Jennie’s close relationship with The Weeknd is the crucial element that made her agree to appearing on “The Idol”. The two are likely close friends, or perhaps just fellow artists who have mutual respect for each other.

On the other hand, Jennie used to be in a relationship with EXO Kai. She was later rumored to date BIGBANG G-Dragon, the YG producer Teddy and BTS V, but none of these rumors are confirmed.

Meanwhile, The Weeknd rarely disclose his private lives to the media, so his relationships never fail to attract attention. It was reported that he dated supermodel Balla Hadid for 4 years, and had a relationship with Selena Gomez for a while.
