“The Good Bad Mother” writer, “I wrote the script after receiving a suspected cancer diagnosis. I want to deliver the message of hope to viewers”
“The Good Bad Mother” writer Bae Se Young explained some details about the drama and shared her thoughts after it ended.
JTBC’s recently ended drama “The Good Bad Mother” is a touching healing comedy about Young Soon (Ra Mi Ran), who has no choice but to become a bad mother for the sake of her child, and her son Kang Ho, who suddenly returns to the age of 7 due to an accident, finding the happiness they’ve lost. The drama successfully wrapped up its journey with a happy ending and achieved the highest rating record of 12%.
Writer Bae Se Young recently had an interview and explained the story of “The Good Bad Mother” in more detail. Regarding the image of the “pig” that was mentioned throughout the story, the writer said, “At first, my plan for ‘The Good Bad Mother’ was a movie scenario”, adding “Back then, I received a suspected cancer diagnosis at a medical checkup and was waiting for another examination three months later. During that time, I was filled with worries and fears that I would leave my child behind. Coincidentally, my husband was working at an animal medicine company and we had visited pig farms together several times. When I heard that the mother pig could only stay with her piglets for 28 days and she would teach her piglets all the pig’s habits during that period, I realized that the life of a mother pig at that time was exactly like the situation I was in”.
Writer Bae continued, “I set a time limit for Young Soon and tried to connect the story of the mother pig with the script using metaphors”, adding “The detail of Kang Ho naming the piglet ‘lion’ not only shows his interest in Mi Joo (Ahn Eun Jin) but also contains the meaning that he will bravely face Oh Tae Soo, who is dangerous like a lion, although he is weak like a pig”.
When asked about the death of Young Soon, which disappointed some viewers, she said, “I had the ending with Young Soon’s death in mind from the beginning of the script writing. If Young Soon doesn’t have a time limit, the stories cannot develop as she won’t try to unfold the case, find evidence, resolves misunderstandings with other characters, and teaches Kang Ho all the skills to survive. I’m satisfied with the ending. Young Soon closes her eyes and rest in peace after solving all her worries so it’s actually a meaningful death.”
The writer also expressed her gratitude for the amazing acting performances of the cast, especially Ra Mi Ran and Lee Do Hyun, pointing out that sometimes the actor even did much better than she expected and imagined when writing the script. She also thanked viewers for their generous love, interest, and favorable reviews throughout the seven weeks of “The Good Bad Mother” broadcasting period.
Lastly, she said, “Through this drama, I hope parents and children understand each other more and reconcile if there are any misunderstandings between them. I want everyone to not lose hope even in the middle of trials and hardships.”
