“The Glory” Park Yeon Jin’s bullying is hard to understand, but it exists in real life

Why does Park Yeon Jin (Lim Ji Yeon) bully her classmates in Netflix’s original series “The Glory”?

Shin Ye Eun (as a child) and Lim Ji Yeon (as an adult), in the role of the main antagonist Park Yeon Jin, who brutally bullied her classmate Moon Dong Eun (Jung Ji So as a child, Song Hye Kyo) is gaining huge popularity for their villain portrayal.

But what makes Park Yeon Jin such a cruel bully? It is terrifying that Park Yeon Jin not only exists in a drama, but also in reality.

Writer Kim Eun Sook briefly mentioned this at the press conference. Most villains in the drama are given a narrative structure of why they became like that.

Choi Hye Jeong (Cha Ju Young) and Son Myung Oh (Kim Gun Woo) have an inferiority complex due to their poor background, which is partially the reason for them to join the group of perpetrators. However, Park Yeon Jin is more of a “villain without a reason”.

Writer Kim said, “I didn’t want to give Park Yeon Jin her legitimacy or make viewers sympathize with her,” implying that Park Yeon Jin is an “absolute evil.” But there is no villain without a reason.

First of all, Park Yeon Jin is the top predator in the bullying hierarchy. At the same time, she is the biggest instigator of school violence. Classes exist in these perpetrator groups, and the relationship becomes more solid as they advance into society.

Choi Hye Jeong, the daughter of a laundry owner who became a flight attendant, was the perpetrator who bullied Moon Dong Eun in school. However, she always suffered from the golden spoon kids Park Yeon Jin (Lim Ji Yeon) and Lee Sara (Kim Hieora). “If it wasn’t Dong Eun, it was you (Hye Jeong) who would have been beaten,” said Lee Sara.  Another golden spoon, Jeon Jae Joon (Park Sung Oh), also treats Son Myung Oh (Kim Gun Woo) like his personal servant, instead of a friend.

In this food chain, Park Yeon Jin initially bullied Yoon So Hee, but after Yoon So Hee died, she changed her target to Moon Dong Eun. When Moon Dong Eun disappears, Choi Hye Jeong becomes the next prey.

In Part 1, the backstory of Park Yeon Jin’s mother and her relationship sparks curiosity. Park Yeon Jin’s mother often goes in and out of fortune-telling and talks like a shaman. She told Park Yeon Jin not to hang out with kids with ‘ㅇ’ in their names (Choi Hye Jeong and Son Myung Oh) because it could lead her to troubles, showing her shallow capitalism.

Park Yeon Jin seems to have already noticed her mother’s shadiness when she was young. Whenever Park Yeon Jin got into trouble due to school violence, her mother’s secret boyfriend, a former police officer, handled it all. Young Yeon Jin even boldly asked her mother’s boyfriend, “Did you sleep with my mother?”

Park Yeon Jin never felt the warm atmosphere of a true family. She did not grow up in a healthy environment. On the outside, she has the competitive edge of a capitalist society. She’s rich, pretty, and sophisticated, but there is no way for her to develop consideration for others. Her vicious personality may have been conceived in this environment.
