More than a decade after the anime The Flowers of Evil stirred massive controversy for its unconventional rotoscoping animation, the series is making a shocking comeback this time as a live-action drama set to air in 2026.
Success in anime adaptations often hinges on faithfulness to the source material and enhancing the original narrative. Regardless of visual appeal, if a series fails to respect the original manga, fans are quick to turn away. This was precisely the case with The Flowers of Evil in 2013 a prime example of an adaptation that divided audiences.

Originally a dark and emotional manga by the underrated Shuzo Oshimi, The Flowers of Evil became infamous when its anime adaptation took a highly unorthodox route. Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama and produced by Studio Zexcs, the anime used full rotoscoping a technique where live-action footage is traced frame by frame by animators. While visually unique, the result was jarring to many, starkly different from the original artwork it was based on.
At the time, viewers were polarized either loving or hating the style, with few opinions in between. Many who disliked the adaptation wished for a remake. Now, over ten years later, that wish is coming true albeit in a way no one expected.

The Flowers of Evil will return as a live-action TV drama scheduled to premiere in Japan in April 2026. While some longtime fans may rejoice, others particularly those dissatisfied with the 2013 anime are expressing mixed feelings about this unexpected revival. No official global streaming release date has been announced yet.
Surprisingly, Japanese fans were generally more receptive to the anime than Western audiences. Yet, these same fans are now voicing concerns over the upcoming live-action version. Social media buzz reveals skepticism about whether the adaptation can truly capture the intensity and emotional depth of the manga. Others have already criticized casting choices, further fueling the debate.

With such a turbulent adaptation history, the 2026 live-action The Flowers of Evil faces the daunting task of winning back fans especially those loyal to the original manga. Given the high bar set by Oshimi’s source material, this new version will need more than nostalgia to succeed.
